Stonehenge and Avebury in one day using public
transport
This is a
timetable of Wilts & Dorset bus services 5, 6 Swindon – Avebury – Amesbury
– Salisbury. I decided to type and post it here on my web page because I was
unable to find W&D bus schedules anywhere on the web. I hope that it will
help somebody. My story (in Russian) about my trips around Britain using public
transport is here. Information
is provided for reference only and is believed to be correct as of February
2002. You agree that you use it at your sole risk, and I will accept no

Note that only through
services and only selected stops are shown. More frequent services exist
between Swindon and Avebury and between Salisbury, Amesbury and Stonehenge. Stonehenge
is some 3 miles from Amesbury, which might be walkable. Railway stations are in
Swindon, Salisbury and Pewsey. National Express coaches serve Swindon and, less
frequently, Salisbury. Also, there is a National Express coach service NX335
between Salisbury, Amesbury, Pewsey, Marlborough and Swindon (originating at
Poole and continuing to Gloucester, Birmingham, Leicester, and Halifax)
operating once a day. It is also shown in the timetable below; note, however,
that it does not call at Avebury.
Fare information: as of
February 2002, single fare between Avebury and Amesbury was GBP 4.50. A Getaway
ticket, good for unlimited travel on most W&D buses for one day, cost GBP
5.50 (it is available from the driver on any W&D bus). Single fare between
Swindon and Avebury on service 49 was GBP 1.70. Also, there is a Wiltshire Day
Rover ticket which might be good for travel on all these buses – check with the
driver on the first bus you board.
